All i can say is WE SURVIVED!!!

OK wow this last week or so has just been so crazy!Lets begin...
So Thursday the 25th February was the last time i think i had a decent nights sleep, OK OK so that whole week up til Thursday was a tiresome one too i guess, as Aidan was cutting his first molar EEEKK! Then Thursday came and he had cut the tooth = good sleep that evening.
Little did i know that the very next day would be the start of yet another sleepless cycle as Aidan started getting snotty and sneezy, well we didn't think to much of this as this was his usual thing after cutting teeth, so we dosed up with ponstan suppositories to help with the pain and waited it out... Saturday was no different, he didn't seem neither better nor worse so with a dose of panado this time we wait again, once again we wake up to an uptight child however he still was no worse for wear, but then Sunday evening rolled around and he seemed to be developing a cough that sounded kind of like an old dog barking(but still no temp and the cough didn't seem to be happening to much, just every so often... Monday morning(morning before Aidan's first birthday) he starts with a "strider"(severe wheezing)so we drag ourselves out of bed and cart him off to the doctor, feeling slightly stupid all the while as the wheezing has cooled off to barely a grumble and he still has no temp...
Doc examines and find that his chest is tight and that his snot nose has turned from a clear slimy substance to a luminescent green and pouring out of him at a rate of knots... "Your son has mild flu with a very minor chest infection- this is why his snot is green, here are his antibiotics..."
"well thank you doctor, so he'll be OK soon?"

Well to say the least he didn't! in fact that very afternoon his wheezing reached an all time high and he was finding it extremely difficult to breathe (now this was terribly distressing for me especially as i had been the one who had been without sleep during this whole fiasco and staying up with Aidan making sure he was alright) so after a call to the baby clinic and being advised that we should rather bring him into casualty to have him looked at as the wheezing was getting worse be the minute, we then pile back into the car for a drive that seemed to last a lifetime with each frantic breathe taken(to note: we live 5min away from the hospital)we arrive at 4.15pm and wait another 5min for the doctor to come see us, in the mean time Aidan has his blood pressure monitored and the nurse fills out the details for the doctor...
He FINALLY arrives(he really was only five min but that felt like a whole other lifetime for me) and by now I'm ready to just burst into tears(this is hard to see as this is the child who has NEVER been sick before...NEVER! coupled with the tiredness i was just shattered, we sit with the doctor and the first thing' he says is "WOW that is some serious breathing issue there, and all you came in for was his sore lip?"
"UUUUMM, I'm sorry what? uh no we definitely came in for the breathing... his sore lip has nothing to do with why we are here..." apparently the lovely nurse placed on his forms that he seemed to have "the herpes virus on his bottom lip" which was not at all the case, the evening before he was busy chasing the dog around the house when he lost his balance and bit his lip in the process...WONDERFUL!!! could you not hear the reason for being here, i mean anyone in a 5 mile radius could tell what the problem was...
We then get asked if we had taken him to a doctor and we promptly tell him about our morning visit to another doctor's rooms and inform him of what the outcome was... "My dear your child does not have flu... he has croup, we need to give him a quaterzone injection and need to put him on an adrenaline/saline nebulise and we will continue to monitor him... well this freaked me out BIG TIME! anyway after about two doses on the nebuliser Aidan still wasn't sounding to good so the doctor said he was going to refer him to one of the paeds, and wait for it.... we also had to admit him into hospital so that they could monitor him through the night and continue with the meds...
WOW what a SHOCK it now dawned on me the severity of it all, oh and the fact that we would spend Aidan's first birthday at the same place we were exactly one year ago, albeit for another reason...sad considering we were going to go to the aquarium... well after going into the childrens ward and having his next bout of nebulising we only realise then that it was already 7.30pm and now had to quickly jump into action as to supper plans and organising bags etc so Andrew and i rush off (leaving Aidan with one of the nurses we end up calling Gogo- this was very hard for us as it all happened so fast)to MacDonald's for dinner then home quickly where i jump in the shower then pack a bag for Aidan and i, we then rush back, to find most of the ward is in silence and all kids in their bed/cot except for our little fighter he is still firmly hanging onto Gogo...i grab Aidan and of to our ward we go, that night= more sleeplessness as we nebulise him every 1/2 hour then onto every hour then every 2 hours etc... long night ahead... however half way through the night Aidan is sounding considerably better and we anxiously await the rounds in the morning to find out if we would be discharged or not, daddy comes in at round 7.30am with Aidan's pressies and we all sing happy birthday to him...(what a way to spend it hey?)

8am draws near and Aidan goes for x-rays to see how he is doing, and now we wait (AGAIN) till rounds,Dr Omar comes in, and tells us he is pleased with Aidan's breathing and shows us the x-ray and points out that his airway is open very nicely and how pleased he is with the way the meds helped , we then get told he has mild bronchitis but that we can go home!!! YAY!!!

Aidan then spent the rest of the week getting better and was well enough to continue with the party on Saturday, which i think just topped his week for him as he was allowed to do as he pleased and what he pleased himself with was all the tasty treats he could eat, he spent 2 hours in one position eating everything he could find...

"All i can say is WE SURVIVED!!!"

Croup is a group of respiratory diseases that often affect infants and children[1] under age 6. It is characterized by a barking cough; a whistling, obstructive sound (stridor) as the child breathes in; and hoarseness due to obstruction in the region of the larynx. It may be mild, moderate or severe, and severe cases, with breathing difficulty, can be fatal if not treated in a hospital.[2] Another type of croup is known as spasmodic croup. People with spasmodic croup first catch a cold, rarely with fever, and then the croupy cough begins. In some cases spasmodic croup may begin suddenly without any preceding cold symptoms. Unlike viral croup, spasmodic croup usually recurs, and can occur in older children, and rarely even in adults. Spasmodic croup is thought to be related to allergies.

My first Pancake experience

Alright so yesterday was Shrove Tuesday (the day before Lent begins for us Catholics) and our church holds an annual pancake evening, where all the pancakes are provided and all we had to do was take our fillers and drinks.

A lovely evening all in all in spite of it's crazy beginning, with the massive thunderstorm on the way to the church which in the end made it an even more spiritual thing for us as we spent the whole journey praying, anyway Candice, Ryan and Kyla-Lee joined us(they came a little later so they would miss the big storm) as did the rest of the Hunt/ Fernandez clans... This was to be a special night, not only was it marking the beginning of Lent but it was also my first experience with these strange flat things that they call pancakes.

THEY WERE DELICIOUS!!! Mommy put just the tiniest sprinkle of cinnamon sugar on for me, and that was the end of that, it was finished quicker than you could say YUM!
i just couldn't get enough of the wonderful flat meal (which is meant to be rolled, but i got so excited that i unraveled it) Man oh man why have you kept this from me for so long?

(Please excuse the quality of the pic as it was taken with mommy's phone)
My first tastes of pancake and Kyla just chilling:

I've been a very busy boy...

Hi all sorry i haven't been posting much lately but i have been a very busy boy!
Now the last time i posted was all about my 1st Christmas, but as you can guess there have been loads of things keeping both me and mommy and daddy busy since then...

So lets begin... during and just after the Christmas season we were busy house(or at least dog and cat sitting) for uncle Pierre and aunty Rene and also for uncle Sean, aunty Larine (also Thomas and "sunshine")so all in all it was 5 dogs and one cat! lots of fun...

Then came my 1st New Years, well that was also loads of fun, aunty Mel and uncle Andrew came and so did aunty Gerry and uncle Kevin and my friend Tyrone! we had a nice braai, (Tyrone and i pretty much polished off a big bag of flings between the two of us) and we then played for a while. But alas i didn't make it to see the New Year in... Mommy was mean and put me to sleep, it was all her fault!

I have also found a new hiding/play place i call it "Toy land's cupboard of fun" but mommy calls it " the Tupperware cupboard" this is a really fun game for me as i pull absolutely everything that i can get my hands on out of the cupboard and then climb in, and sit there like I'm on my throne, surveying my wondrous deeds of unpackment... (yes unpackment is my new word, i am the king, that's why i can make up my own words)

I have also been cruising now for a while BUT i have some new tricks too, i can pull up on gates and shake them like I'm in a prison movie, i can also climb up all the stairs at home now, i must admit it was quite funny the first time i did it, i gave mommy and daddy the fright of their lives!

Hmmm now what else can i do?
... oh yes i can stand unaided for about 15-20 seconds- this is my proudest accomplishment this year as it totally amazes both mommy and daddy, Yes i know I'm ammmazing! i just cant wait until i can walk, WOW it's gonna be great!

OK OK so it wasn't just me that's been busy, it's mom and dad too!
mommy has been busy planning my party- it's going to be such fun,I'm turning ONE! and practicing the cupcakes and chocolates so that when she has to make them for real they will ROCK! I love my mommy!

And daddy has been very busy at work, he has been building some new applications for the teams to use, he has made quite a few apps for me to even start explaining what each one does, but he is very good at it, he won two awards for it, the first award he got a really cool trophy and the second one he got a trophy and a 27" LCD screen for his PC at work(he has a BIIIGGG picture of ME on it) we are so proud of daddy, he is so clever, but he must just be careful because one day i am soooo going to be more clever than he is... hey dad watch out!

Oh yes i also have a new play friend, her name is Angeline and she comes on Thursdays, she is our new maid, i love to follow her around the house and watch her work- such fun!!

some things i love to do:

1) i love to swim

2) i love banging on gates

3) i love playing in Toy land's cupboard of fun

4) i love the beach

5) i love ice-cream

6) i love smiling

7) i love to pull my tongue

8) i love my dog

Our First Christmas!

Okay so I'm pretty sure that you have all gathered by now that this was Aidan's first Christmas, so you will then realize just how much excitement there was in not only our household but that of the Granny, Grandpa, and Noona and Goompa's homes too...

To say that mommy and daddy went a little crazy with the gifts, could, well, be an understatement, the floor under the tree was crammed with gifts and Aidan's stocking was,i guess you could say, overflowing...

Anyway our Christmas festivities really were extended this year, it all started with opening some pressies on Christmas eve with moms side of the family, then Christmas day we stopped by at Noona and Goompa's to give Nana and Granddad their little gift and was surprised to see that the little Mr got yet another noisy toy... however mommy doesn't mind it too much as it's not as bad as some of the toys that were around back in her day! After we left Noona and Goompa's we went home and had a lovely fruit breakfast and open (wait for it...) more presents and spent the rest of the day playing with our new toys.

On Boxing day we went down the coast to visit daddy's family, and lo and behold there were more gifts... Now both my toy boxes are full! Yes that's right i have two! Well i suppose everyone needs just a LITTLE spoiling at times...now we have enough toys for upstairs, downstairs and in a bag for when we go out!!!

Sleep Training...

So about 2 weeks or so ago, Andrew and i decided that it was time to start training Aidan to sleep in his cot, as he is too long and wriggly now to stay in the bed with us...

So this was how bedtime in the Bevan household happened, mommy and Aidan went to bed and Aidan would have his last feed and fall asleep, then later in the evening daddy would come to bed however by this time Aidan has almost successfully pushed mom out the bed and has laid claim to pretty much every inch of our queen size bed , mom and dad ended up practically sleeping on the seams of the bed whilst the smallest body of the lot, stretched out ,proud as a peacock with this feat that he managed to pull off once again! Now this was getting out of hand so we decided that it was time to train him to go down in his cot, we decide to put his camp cot into our room(so that he still has the same sights, sounds and can still smell his mom and dad's presence (nooo, I'm not talking about fart smells!)
Anyway night 1 was a complete disaster he nearly screamed the whole complex down when we tried to transfer this presumably sleeping baby into the cot...well that didn't work... anyway we waited a couple of days before we tried again, but this time mommy pulled out her DIY skills that she tends to hide, and totally disassembled Aidan's proper cot moved it through to her room and reassembled it next to her side of the bed,(now i didn't think that this would work either as he hates this cot just as much as the camp cot!)
Well that night we tried again expecting another sleepless night and after his feed next to mom, we rolled over and went into our cot! now the only time he comes into our bed is just before his bedtime to have his feed then again when (still sleeping - i might add) he climbs back in bed at round about 3-4am for his morning feed then low and behold he goes back into the cot after that...

Now this makes mommy so proud when she puts him there and he is content but last night he decided, "well OK I'm full of milk i think I'll just crawl into my cot on my own thank you very much!" that almost made my heart break because it made me feel like he didn't need my help anymore, he could now do it himself...
well anyway the point is, now all three of us have a decent chunk of bed to ourselves...
